Volunteer-Run & Hired Premises

Fire Doors for Churches, Village Halls & Community Buildings

Churches, village halls, scout huts and community centres are often run by volunteers, used at irregular times and hired out to different groups. Parsec Fire Doors repairs, replaces and installs fire doors in these buildings, working from your fire risk assessment action list or a specialist fire door report and planning the work around bookings and keyholders.

How Community Buildings Differ For Door Works

People

Volunteer decision-making

Trustees, committees or wardens approve work, often at scheduled meetings. A clear itemised quotation helps a decision be made once.

Use

Intermittent and varied use

The building may be empty for days, then busy for an event. Work is planned around the booking diary rather than a working week.

Access

Keyholders and locking up

Someone has to open up and lock up. Access arrangements are agreed before each visit.

Fabric

Older or historic buildings

Original doors and fabric can be a constraint on what is practical, which is considered in the scope.

Which Doors Are Involved

The doors that need fire-resisting performance are identified by the building's fire strategy, fire risk assessment or a formal fire door report, not by a standard list. We work from those documents. Typical openings that appear in them include kitchen doors, stair and corridor doors, boiler and store rooms, and doors between a hall and ancillary rooms.

Some of these doors take heavy use during events while others, such as cupboards and plant rooms, are rarely opened. Both can develop defects: wear and impact on the busy ones, and seized hardware, painted seals or added locks on the quiet ones.

Illustrative Example

Illustrative only, not a completed job: a village hall's fire risk assessment action list notes that the kitchen door no longer closes, the store-room door has a padlock hasp screwed through it, and the door between the main hall and the corridor has damaged edges.

The quotation lists each door separately so the committee can approve it at one meeting. The kitchen closer and store-room hasp are defined repairs, done on a weekday with no bookings. The damaged door is assessed for repair against its construction; a replacement price is given as an alternative in case repair proves unsuitable. Work is timed so the hall is ready for the weekend's hire.

Repair Or Replacement

Where the cause, components and supporting method allow, repair may be possible on a sound, identifiable door using compatible components. Replacement is proposed where the leaf or frame is badly damaged, alterations cannot be supported, the construction cannot be established for the required performance, or repair would not reasonably restore it.

In historic buildings, retaining an existing door may be desirable. That is discussed within what the evidence and the required performance support; our listed buildings guide covers that approach in detail.

Budgeting In Phases

Community budgets are often fixed in advance or depend on grants and fundraising. An itemised quotation per door lets you phase works by the priorities in your assessment and see what each phase includes. We do not publish prices; each quotation reflects the actual doors and access.

  • Each door priced separately with its reference
  • Repair and replacement options shown where both are realistic
  • Making good and decoration included or clearly excluded
  • VAT treatment shown on every figure

Scheduling Around Bookings

  • Booking diary checked before dates are proposed
  • Regular hirers told in advance if a room is unavailable
  • Keyholder or key-safe arrangement agreed for each visit
  • Work areas cleared and doors checked for closing and latching before handback
  • Building locked and secured as agreed at the end of each visit

Quotation Inputs And Close-Out

Send the fire risk assessment action list or fire door report, a list or sketch of the doors, photographs of both faces of each door, the booking pattern, keyholder contacts and whether the building is listed. The quotation should state what close-out record is included; this may include door-reference work records, photographs and relevant product information, as applicable. Any such record covers the works only; it is not an inspection report or compliance certificate.
