Fire Doors for Nurseries and Childcare Settings

Doors in early-years settings can see regular use by staff and parents, with small children nearby and a working day that can leave limited time for trades. We price and carry out fire door repairs, remedials and replacement for nurseries and childcare premises, planned around your opening hours and your safeguarding arrangements.

Two Building Types

Converted premises

Houses and older buildings adapted for childcare

Existing doors may be original domestic doors, earlier upgrades or a mix. Their construction and any evidence for them need checking before deciding between repair and replacement, and the layout may limit the door sizes that fit.

Purpose-built

Dedicated early-years buildings and units

Doorsets may have known specifications, labels or handover information, which can help match remedial work to the existing doorset. Damage and adjustment issues can still build up with daily use.

Door Issues To Look For

  • Room doors that close too fast, too slowly or fail to latch
  • Closers adjusted or disconnected to make doors easier to open
  • Hinges loosened by repeated heavy use
  • Kitchen and laundry doors with damaged leaves or seals
  • Doors wedged open outside the setting's arrangements
  • Additions such as locks, viewers or protectors fitted without compatible evidence

Finger Protection And Other Add-Ons

Settings may ask about finger guards, hinge-side covers or additional locks. These can only be fitted to a fire door where they are specified and compatible with that doorset's evidence. Unsuitable fixings or materials can affect how the door performs. We check what is proposed against the available manufacturer information and record what was fitted; where compatibility is not demonstrated, we raise it rather than proceed.

Working Around Children And Opening Hours

Before work starts we agree with the setting manager how operatives will sign in, where they will work, which rooms will be out of use and how tools and materials will be kept away from children. Noisy or dusty items, and anything that takes a door out of service, can be planned for closure days, early mornings, evenings or weekends where you prefer.

Where a door on an escape route cannot be completed in one visit, any temporary arrangement is a matter for the setting's responsible person. Our guide to remedial works in occupied buildings covers phasing in more detail.

What To Send For A Quotation

  • Fire risk assessment actions or a fire door inspection report, if you have one
  • A simple door list or floor plan with room names
  • Photographs of each door, both faces, and of labels or plugs on the edge
  • Whether the building is converted or purpose-built, and if leased, who is responsible for doors
  • Opening hours, closure days and preferred access times
  • Your visitor, supervision and safeguarding requirements
  • Any finger protection or other items you want included

Repair Or Replacement

Items such as closer adjustment, hinge fixings and seals, sit within fire door repairs and remedials. Where a door cannot be supported by a repair, a new doorset is covered by fire door installation. Closer behaviour is explained in our guide to fire door closers.

Formal Inspections And Records

We do not produce formal fire door inspection reports. Where you need one, it can be arranged through a specialist external inspection partner — see fire door inspections. Where included in the quotation, we provide a door-referenced record of the work carried out; see records and close-out.

Schools And Care Settings

Primary schools, academies and colleges are covered on our schools and education estates page, and residential care on care homes and supported housing. Send your details through our contact form to start a quotation.
