Fire Doors for Shops & Retail Units

Parsec Fire Doors repairs, replaces and installs fire doors in shops and retail units — stockroom, rear exit and flat-above separation doors — programmed around trading hours. Formal inspections and reports are arranged through an external specialist inspection partner.

Where Fire Doors Sit In A Shop

Retail units vary from a single high-street shop with a flat above to larger units with offices and staff areas. The doors that need to be fire-resisting are set by the fire strategy, report or FRA, but they usually fall into these groups.

Stockroom and back-of-house

Doors between the sales floor and stock, staff and storage areas — heavily used and often propped for deliveries.

Route to the rear exit

Doors on the escape route from the back of the shop, frequently doubling as the delivery entrance.

Separation from flats and other uses

Doors between the shop and residential accommodation, offices or neighbouring units, where separation matters most.

Plant, cleaner and meter cupboards

Smaller service doors where required, often left unlatched or altered for cabling.

What Goes Wrong In Trading Premises

  • Impact damage from cages, trolleys and stock on leaves, edges and frames
  • Doors wedged or tied open during deliveries and restocking
  • Extra bolts, padlocks or hasps added to rear doors for security
  • Closers removed or overpowered on busy stockroom doors
  • Shopfitting that has cut through or reused doors without regard to their rating
  • Signage, alarm contacts or cabling fixed through the leaf or frame

Security Versus Escape

Shops need secure rear doors, but a door on an escape route should still open easily from the inside without a key. The problems we see are nearly always added hardware — surface bolts, padlocked bars or unsuitable locks. We correct the fire door and its ironmongery so it closes, latches and seals, and coordinate with your security or alarm installer on anything that changes their systems.

Refits, Occupied Units And Trading Hours

Fire door work often coincides with a refit or change of tenant. Where the shop is trading, we agree the order of work with the manager so the sales floor and escape routes stay open.

  • Back-of-house doors programmed while trading continues
  • Customer-route and escape doors done before opening or after closing
  • Residents above told in advance where shared doors are affected
  • Work areas cleared and each door checked before handing back

Repair Or Replacement

Damage and hardware problems on a sound, identifiable doorset are often repairable. Replacement is usually the better route where the leaf or frame is heavily damaged, has been altered beyond its evidence, or the construction cannot be established for an opening that needs it — for example a separating door to a flat that turns out to be an ordinary internal door.

Formal Inspection And Parsec's Role

Where a formal door-by-door inspection and written report is needed, we arrange it through an external specialist inspection partner. Parsec then scopes, prices and carries out the works from that report, an existing report or an FRA action list. A Parsec site assessment only confirms scope and measurements for the quotation.

Quotation And Evidence

Send the report or action list, a simple door list with locations, photographs of both faces and the hardware, and your trading hours. The quotation sets out each door's action, components, making good, exclusions and VAT basis. At completion, records follow the same door references for your fire safety file and, where relevant, your landlord.
