Issued Design and Specification

Fire Doors for Architects & Specifiers

Parsec Fire Doors prices and installs fire doors against an issued design and specification. For architects and specifiers, the focus is keeping the door schedule, product evidence, approved changes and installation record aligned. We do not design the building’s fire strategy or decide its required ratings.

Start with the Issued Information

Identify the drawing, schedule and specification revisions on which the quotation should be based, who is authorised to answer design queries and whether the information is issued for pricing or construction. A conflicting door reference, performance requirement or hardware set should be queried, not resolved by an installer’s assumption.

The general supply-and-fit service remains fire door installation. Site logistics and main-contractor sequencing belong in developers and main contractors; this page concerns specification control and the evidence needed to fit the issued design.

Information Needed before a Quote

Door ratings and smoke-control requirements must come from the design, fire strategy or relevant specification. A familiar rating is not permission to assume every opening has the same requirements. Separate unknown opening dimensions from unresolved performance requirements, and identify what cannot be firmly priced until confirmed.

  • Issued door schedule with references, locations, quantities and revision
  • Required fire resistance, smoke-control and closing performance for each opening
  • Configuration, handing, dimensions, accessibility and security requirements
  • Wall/supporting construction, frame/perimeter detail and floor levels
  • Glazing, ironmongery and access-control schedules with compatible component details
  • Finish, making-good boundaries, proposed hold points and required handover records

Read Evidence from Requirement to Product to Installation

This is a practical evidence sequence, not a rule that one document overrides all others. Where documents conflict or a detail falls outside their scope, seek clarification before ordering or fitting. Our certification and traceability guide covers product identity and limitations.

Performance requirement

The issued design sets what the opening must achieve. Resolve contradictions between the strategy, door schedule and hardware schedule with the authorised design team.

Applicable product evidence

Identify the proposed doorset or assembly and the test, assessment or certification evidence that supports the actual configuration. A generic brochure or rating label is not enough to establish every detail.

Supported components and details

Check that glazing, seals, hardware, frame, wall construction and fixings are within the applicable product evidence and manufacturer instructions. Do not mix individually described fire-rated items by assumption.

Installation and record

Install to the relevant supported detail and retain the agreed product identity and works records. Evidence for a product is not a claim of third-party accreditation of Parsec or a certificate of building compliance.

Substitutions Require Written Design-Team Approval

A proposed alternative leaf, frame, closer, latch or glazing system may change more than appearance or availability. Set out the affected door references, the proposed product, its supporting evidence, and the difference from the issued specification. Obtain written approval from the authorised design team before ordering or installing a substitution.

Approval is not a substitute for technical support: the alternative must still have applicable evidence and compatible installation instructions. If the proposed combination cannot be supported, it should not be fitted simply because an email calls it equivalent. Record the approved revision and any quotation or programme change so the order and handover schedule describe the installed assembly.

Resolve Interfaces before They Reach the Leaf

Access control and release

Agree locks, cable transfer, escape operation and any alarm-release interface with the design team and the relevant specialist. Define who supplies, connects and tests the system; do not assume door fitting includes alarm or access-control system work.

Glazing and apertures

Use the glazing system and aperture details supported for the doorset. Vision-panel size, glass, beads, seals and protection cannot be substituted solely because the glass has a fire rating.

Ironmongery and accessibility

Confirm the specified hardware set, reliable closing and latching and the intended access requirements together. Do not compromise self-closing or introduce unsupported machining to resolve a coordination conflict.

Supporting opening and finishes

Confirm wall type, frame fixing, perimeter sealing and finished floor/threshold relationship against the supported installation detail. Allocate making good and decoration explicitly rather than leaving the boundary to the final visit.

Agree Hold Points and a Query Trail

Hold points should be agreed for the particular instruction, not presented as a universal inspection regime. They may include product and opening checks before fitting, review of concealed fixing or perimeter details before covering, and completion checks after relevant interfaces are finished. Identify who reviews each point and what evidence is required.

If the delivered assembly, opening or installed interface does not match the approved information, stop the affected operation and raise a referenced query. A site instruction should not bypass required design approval or product evidence. Keep unapproved changes and unresolved openings separate from completed work.

Snags and Handover Should Match the Installed Revision

Log snags by door reference, with the issue, required decision and status. The new-build snagging guide covers useful records; formal inspection and sign-off requirements should be agreed separately from the installer’s completion checks.

Specify the handover deliverables in the quotation: the installed product references, available manufacturer information, approved changes, agreed photographs or works records and outstanding interfaces. Our handover documentation guide explains the record set. These records are not third-party installation certification or a declaration that the building complies.

Formal fire-door inspections, reports and reinspections are arranged through an external specialist inspection partner. A Parsec pre-works assessment scopes, measures and prices repair or replacement; it is not a formal inspection report.

Send the Schedule and the Design Queries

Use the enquiry form for the issued schedule, specification extracts, relevant drawings and named design approval contact. Identify unresolved requirements and the records you need at handover. If an existing door may be retained, the proposed repair needs supporting evidence and condition assessment rather than an automatic replacement assumption.
